For those eager to explore, the picturesque countryside is perfect for a bicycle ride, and the hotel reception can assist with rentals.
You will leave Negombo after breakfast, and along the way visit the Negombo Fish Markets. Your private vehicle takes you to ancient Anuradhapura via the small town of Chilaw. Those keen on history and archaeology might like to visit Mihintale, the sacred birthplace of Sri Lankan Buddhism, a recommended optional activity. The price of this will depend on the number of people sharing the vehicle.
Today’s itinerary includes a guided bicycle tour through the city, where you’ll explore the ancient ruins and visit the revered Bo Tree—a sacred symbol marking the origins of Buddhism in Sri Lanka and inspiring Anuradhapura’s magnificent structures. The ruins are scattered across a vast area, some nestled within serene woodlands, while others resemble tranquil parks, adorned with columns and ponds.
Continue your journey to Polonnaruwa, traveling via Maradankawala by public bus and private vehicle. This ancient city became the capital of the Indian Chola Dynasty after the fall of Anuradhapura in the late 10th century. Unlike the more scattered ruins you’ve encountered, Polonnaruwa’s remnants are close together and remarkably well-preserved. Cycling through the 1,000-year-old ruins is the best way to explore the area. As the day cools, you’ll have the opportunity to visit more palaces, temples, and stupas. A highlight of your visit will likely be the impressive stone Buddhas—14-meter-high granite carvings of the iconic reclining Buddha, a masterpiece of Sinhalese rock art. You’ll also explore a well-curated museum, featuring scale models that recreate the grandeur of Polonnaruwa’s past.
This morning, depart from Polonnaruwa and journey to Dambulla in a private vehicle. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the stunning Dambulla Cave Temples, perched high on a stone cliff with numerous steps leading to the entrance. Inside, you’ll discover over 150 Buddha statues and captivating frescoes and paintings adorning the walls and ceilings of the five caves.
In the afternoon, unwind by the hotel pool or opt for an exciting wildlife jeep safari to Minneriya, Kaudulla, or Eco National Park. With a bit of luck, you might even catch a glimpse of wild elephants. The availability of parks to visit varies by season, but both Minneriya and Kaudulla are conveniently located near Dambulla.
Start your day early with a visit to Sigiriya, best experienced before the midday heat sets in. This ancient fortress, perched atop a rock, is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks. The climb to the summit is challenging, but those who make the trek are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views. Be sure to wear sturdy footwear, as the ascent is steep and the terrain uneven. If the climb isn’t for you, the lush gardens at the base of the rock offer a serene alternative, with stunning views of the fortress above.
After exploring Sigiriya, return to your hotel to freshen up before continuing your journey to Kandy. En route, consider stopping at one of the region’s delightful spice gardens. Here, you can enjoy a flavorful lunch and discover the medicinal properties of the spices used in local cuisine and traditional remedies.
Once in the picturesque city of Kandy, immerse yourself in the spiritual ambiance of the Dalada Maligawa, also known as the Temple of the Tooth, Sri Lanka’s most revered Buddhist site. Join the white-clad pilgrims who gather here in worship. If time allows, you can also explore the National Museum or wander through the renowned Botanical Gardens, both offering unique insights into the region’s rich heritage.
Today, you’ll explore a nearby tea factory with a guided tour that reveals the fascinating process behind Sri Lanka’s most famous beverage. Naturally, you’ll have the chance to taste some of the exquisite varieties while you’re there. Afterward, retreat to your hotel in Kandy, a tranquil oasis away from the city’s hustle and bustle, offering serene views over the town—a perfect spot to relax and unwind.
Begin your day with a picturesque train ride to Bandarawela, where you’ll travel through lush tea plantations and wind your way through the mountains into the highlands. Upon arrival, immerse yourself in the rich flavors of Sri Lanka with a visit to a local home for an authentic cooking demonstration. Discover the secrets of traditional Sri Lankan cuisine, and then savor the delicious meal you’ve helped prepare.

Pause for a delightful lunch in Haldummulla before continuing your journey to your jungle camp accommodation at Udawalawe. En route, you’ll have the chance to visit the picturesque Diyaluma Falls. This evening, relax in your lake-facing camp, which adjoins a forest reserve known for its medicinal herbs used in ayurvedic practices. Upon arrival, you may also opt for a short tour of the nearby village.
This morning offers an exciting optional excursion to Udawalawe National Park, where you can search for elephants. Please note that this adventure starts with an early wake-up call around 4:30 am. For added adventure, take a bicycle ride or tuk-tuk to the nearby town of Weligama, where vibrant fishing boats line the shore, offering fresh catches. Alternatively, explore the historic coastal city of Galle, a UNESCO World Heritage site, by bike. From September to April, you can also embark on an optional whale-watching excursion. Be sure to consult your guide to book this experience at least one day in advance.
Continue your journey down the coast to the enchanting city of Galle. Discover the grandeur of the World Heritage-listed Dutch Fort, renowned for its expansive walls and intriguing historical buildings. Make a stop near the fort’s entrance to meet Mr. Sunil, a skilled local artisan specializing in traditional woodcarving. He will guide you through a hands-on demonstration of this craft and invite you to try it yourself. In the evening, take a leisurely walk around the fort’s historic ramparts and savor a stunning sunset over the sea.
Departing from Galle, we board a train to Colombo, the vibrant capital city of Sri Lanka. Enjoy a bus tour highlighting key landmarks such as Independence Square, the Parliament, and a view of the National Museum. The tour concludes with a visit to the Barefoot Fairtrade Store, where you can explore a range of local handicrafts and support small-scale artisans. If your visit coincides with a Saturday, don’t miss the Good Market, a bustling local event featuring stalls from social enterprises and eco-friendly businesses. To wrap up your journey, join us for an optional farewell dinner with the group, celebrating the memorable experiences shared.

- This itinerary includes hiking on Days 9 and 10, offering a fantastic opportunity to explore the scenic hill country and connect with the local Tamil community. The hikes cover approximately 10-12 km each day over relatively flat terrain. A basic level of fitness is recommended, as some travelers have found the trek physically challenging. The trails can be rough, muddy, and slippery, especially after rain. If you feel the hikes may be too strenuous, we can arrange alternative transport for you.
- The views from the top of Lion Rock in Sigiriya are breathtaking, but reaching the summit requires climbing uneven, narrow steps and navigating confined walkways. If you have a fear of heights or mobility issues, you may prefer to skip this activity.
- On Day 11, the drive to Mirissa is downhill, winding, and slow, which has caused motion sickness for some travelers in the past. If you’re prone to motion sickness, we recommend consulting your GP before your trip for advice on suitable medication.
