Sri Lanka Real Food Adventure
Welcome to Sri Lanka! True to its nickname, the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean,’ this country enchants with its palm-fringed beaches, lush plantations, and ancient landmarks. It’s also a culinary haven, offering a unique blend of Indian, Portuguese, Malay, English, Arab, and Dutch influences. Your journey starts in the coastal city of Negombo, where you’ll gather with your local guide and fellow travelers for a 6 pm welcome meeting. Spend your first evening exploring the coastline, getting acquainted with your group, and watching the fishing boats drift by. You might also choose to dine together and savor your first taste of Sri Lankan cuisine.
Start your day early by visiting the bustling Negombo fish market, located at the northern edge of a lagoon. This market is famous for its lobsters, crabs, and prawns. Navigate through stalls brimming with seafood as vendors enthusiastically promote their goods, offering a vivid glimpse into local commerce. Next, head to a coconut plantation to learn about the crucial role of this superfood in Sri Lankan life. Discover how every part of the coconut tree is utilized, savor the refreshing taste of king coconut water, watch as ‘toddy tappers’ extract palm wine from the coconut sap, and sample the final product. Enjoy a traditional Sri Lankan rice and curry lunch before traveling to Dambulla. This area is renowned for its intricately decorated cave temples and is surrounded by natural and historic landmarks. In the evening, you have free time to explore. Consider joining your guide on an optional street food tour to sample some classic Sri Lankan snacks, including the renowned hoppers (savory bowl-shaped pancakes).
After breakfast, take a short drive to Sigiriya to explore the iconic Lion Rock. Here, you can climb to the summit and explore the ancient fortress complex, which includes a 200-meter high rock with remnants of a defensive capital from the fifth century. The site features stunning frescoes, terraced gardens, and cascading fountains. Following your visit to Lion Rock, head to a nearby chena cultivation area to witness traditional farming methods. This ancient agricultural practice is especially prevalent in the dry zone of the country, where rainfall is limited to a few months each year, and the primary crops include tropical vegetables, cereals, grains, yams, and corn. Enjoy a lunch featuring tropical vegetables, tapioca curry, and fried fish from the local lake. In the late afternoon, return to Dambulla to visit the bustling wholesale market. This vibrant market offers a wide variety of fresh produce, much of which is sent to Colombo, and provides a glimpse into Sri Lanka’s agricultural diversity. The rest of the evening is yours to explore at your leisure. Feel free to wander around town or relax with a drink at one of the many restaurants near the market. Your guide will also have recommendations for the best roti in town.
Perched high on a cliff, the impressive Dambulla Cave Temples await your exploration this morning. Take time to admire the numerous Buddha statues, frescoes, and paintings. En route to the heart of the country and the former residence of Sri Lanka’s last king, stop for lunch at a spice garden in Matale, a renowned spice-growing region. Discover how spices are used not just in cuisine but also in cosmetics and ayurvedic medicine. Experience the fragrant aromas of cumin, cinnamon, and curry leaves, and enjoy dishes such as pumpkin curry flavored with aromatic fenugreek, accompanied by dry chili sambol and traditional coconut roti. Continue your journey to Kandy, arriving by late afternoon. This charming city, surrounded by lush greenery, features a picturesque lake, quaint shops, a bustling market, and excellent dining options. In the evening, witness locals worshipping at Kandy’s Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth), one of Sri Lanka’s most sacred sites housing a relic of the Buddha’s tooth. With the evening free, you might hear the rhythmic chopping of a chef preparing kottu roti—watch as they skillfully transform a ball of dough into a thin sheet of roti, mix it with vegetables and spices, and create this delicious dish.
Start your day with a guided stroll through Kandy’s bustling city center, including a visit to the Central Market and a tasting of local fresh fruits. On your way, you’ll also stop by a tea factory. The rest of the day is yours to explore at your own pace. Kandy offers a National Museum, several monasteries, and many picturesque walks. The botanical gardens here are among the finest in Asia. In the early evening, join a Sinhalese family for a sweet-tooth indulgence with a Kandyan-style Sri Lankan dinner and cooking class. Learn to make string hoppers—delicate rice noodles that require some skill to perfect—alongside a coconut milk-based chicken curry that’s closer to Thai than North Indian flavors. End your meal with specialty sweets influenced by Dutch and Portuguese dessert traditions.
Prepare your camera for a scenic adventure to Bandarawela in the highlands. As you travel, you’ll pass by picturesque waterfalls, quaint villages, and climb through the mountains to this charming town, once favored by British plantation managers. Enjoy breathtaking views of lush green tea fields and vegetable gardens. This evening, get a glimpse into local life with an invitation to a local home for a cooking demonstration and a traditional dinner.
Wake up early and explore the lush tea plantations in the area. Hike through the tea fields to discover the country’s key export and interact with local tea pickers who will demonstrate their skills and let you try picking and weighing tea yourself. Afterward, head to Haputale for a home-cooked lunch with a Tamil family, enjoying traditional Tamil dishes like dosa (a crispy rice pancake) and idli (a savory steamed rice cake served with curry sauces or chutneys). Return to Bandarawela in the late afternoon to soak in the town’s rural charm and the stunning surrounding landscapes.
Head out to the wilds of Yala National Park, or Udawalawe National Park if you visit during the off season. The park boasts a range of diverse ecosystems and is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including sloth bears and numerous bird species. In the evening, embark on a safari tour and use binoculars to spot elusive leopards lounging in trees or prowling through the brush, crocodiles patrolling the river, or wild elephants grazing on the grasslands. Please note that during inclement weather, such as heavy rainfall, park visits may be restricted, and an alternative activity will be arranged.
Start your day by sampling a beloved Sri Lankan treat: buffalo curd. Served in vibrant terracotta pots with thick, golden treacle, this delicacy can be enjoyed as a snack, alongside meals, or as a dessert. Sri Lankans are known for their sweet tooth, and this is the epitome of sweetness! On your way to the charming beach village of Mirissa, savor a delightful lunch featuring biryani and watalappam (coconut custard pudding). Spend the afternoon unwinding or exploring the pristine golden sands of Sri Lanka’s southern coastline. The beach stretches out in a sweeping curve with serene, clear waters perfect for swimming and breathtaking sunsets that make it a paradise you’ll never want to leave. You might opt for a bicycle ride or tuk-tuk to watch vibrant fishing boats return with their catch, or take a boat tour to spot whales and dolphins. If you prefer a more laid-back experience, grab a beer, relax, and enjoy watching surfers tackle the waves.
Experience a unique glimpse into local life this morning as you meet a local fisherman to learn about their craft and how their lives have transformed since the tsunami. Enjoy a seafood lunch with a fisherman’s family, where you’re likely to savor a delicious crab curry. Afterwards, visit the beautifully preserved colonial town of Galle, where European architecture meets South Asian traditions. In the evening, explore the Royal Dutch Fort, wandering through its labyrinth of gallery-lined narrow streets and uncovering 400 years of rich history. Return to Mirissa for the night.
Head north for the last destination on your culinary journey: Colombo, the vibrant commercial center of Sri Lanka. This cosmopolitan city offers a blend of lively street markets, historic landmarks, intriguing museums, top-notch restaurants, and excellent shopping. Wander through streets brimming with tasty snacks, street food, and beloved local dining spots. Savor a final meal influenced by Dutch Burgher cuisine and wrap up your food adventure with newfound friends.
