Ayu-bowan! Welcome to Sri Lanka. Your journey starts in the charming beachside town of Negombo with a welcome meeting at 5:30 pm. Renowned for its historic fishing industry, Negombo is a picturesque port city situated near Sri Lanka’s international airport. If you arrive early, you can watch the fishing boats venture out to sea, take a leisurely walk along the beach to see the day’s catch drying in the sun, or enjoy a seafood feast. The surrounding countryside, with its intricate canal system, offers a captivating glimpse of Sri Lankan rural life, best explored by bicycle.
Start your day early with a trip to Dambulla, home to Sri Lanka’s largest and best-preserved cave temple complex. After settling into your accommodation, take a short drive to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Sigiriya for your first activity: hiking up the 1,200 steps of the renowned Lion Rock. This ancient fortress dramatically rises above the plains, providing an impressive sight. Along the way, you’ll explore the water and boulder gardens, frescoes, and the mirror wall. The final part of the climb takes about half an hour, leading you along steep walkways and steps to the rocky plateau, which stands 200 meters above the jungle. From the top, the panoramic views of the surrounding area and nearby Pidurangala Rock are breathtaking. After descending, return to Dambulla for a relaxing evening.
Today, you’ll embark on a leisurely jeep safari lasting around three hours through the nearby Minneriya National Park. This park, characterized by a blend of evergreen forests and scrublands, is home to sambar deer, leopards, and elephants roaming freely. Following the safari, you’ll travel by private vehicle to the Knuckles Mountain Range, where you’ll stay for the next two nights. Named for its resemblance to human knuckles, this UNESCO World Heritage site features 34 mountains ranging from 900 to 2000 meters. Encircled by dense forests, waterfalls, and terraced rice fields, the area offers some of Sri Lanka’s finest hiking trails. Tonight, you’ll connect with nature by camping next to the clear waters and natural rock pools of the Thelgamu Oya stream. To ensure you’re refreshed for tomorrow’s hike, tonight’s activities will be limited to an evening walk around the village, followed by a relaxing riverside group dinner.
Today, you’ll set off early for a full-day guided hike along the Manigala Trek in the Knuckles region. After breakfast, begin your hike through lush forests and rolling hillsides, passing cliffs and flowing rivers. You may want to explore some of the villages along the way, nestled among expansive rice terraces. Enjoy lunch by the river before continuing along the stone and dirt trail up to the impressive Manigala Rock, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the peaks and valley below. After soaking in the vistas, descend back to camp to relish a hearty dinner after a long, rewarding day of hiking.
Start your day with a moderate hike through the forest to Knuckles’ famous Mini World’s End, an observation point that offers a breathtaking view of Thelgamuwa Valley and a dramatic 1192-meter (4000-foot) drop to the forest floor. The expansive views over the misty valley and distant mountain peaks are spectacular, so be sure to bring your camera! After the hike, you’ll drive to Kandy, enjoying the beautiful scenery along the way. Situated in the hills of the Kandy plateau, this city was the last capital of Sri Lanka’s ancient kings. The rest of the day is yours to explore – consider visiting the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, with its golden roof. The temple houses the Buddha’s tooth relic, which has historically played a significant role in local governance. Kandy’s temple and its status as the last city of the Sri Lankan Kings have earned it a UNESCO World Heritage designation.
Begin your day with a picturesque train ride to Hatton. Upon arrival, cycle from the train station to the quaint village of Norton Bridge, taking in the vast tea estates and scenic, tree-lined hills along the route. After checking into your hotel, you can choose to hike up Adam’s Peak if you’re feeling adventurous. This peak is a popular pilgrimage site, with visitors ascending a candle-lit trail lined with shrines and food stalls in the evening. Alternatively, you can relax and enjoy a cup of Ceylon tea—the afternoon is yours to spend as you please.
After breakfast, hop back on your mountain bike for a mostly downhill journey through the heart of tea country. Cycle from Hatton through Bogawantalawa, renowned for its premium Ceylon Tea, to Balangoda. Pedal through the beautifully sculpted green hills of the ‘Golden Valley of Ceylon’. Along the way, take breaks for snacks and lunch, giving you plenty of energy and photo opportunities. Afterward, transfer to the charming coastal town of Mirissa. This destination combines the charm of a fishing village with the relaxation of a beachside resort, perfect for unwinding by the sea after a few active days. If you’re still feeling energetic, head to nearby Weligama, an ideal spot to catch some waves at the local surf or bodyboarding schools.
Begin your day with a brief drive to the quaint town of Unanwitiya, the starting point for an exhilarating kayaking adventure down the Gin River. After receiving instructions from your expert guides, you’ll navigate the clear waters as they wind downstream. Paddle past lush forests, sandbanks, tea plantations, and rice paddy fields, keeping an eye out for monitor lizards, birds, and occasionally a troop of monkeys. Following your kayaking experience, enjoy a delicious local lunch at the boathouse before heading to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Galle for a countryside cycling tour. Once a key port for the local cinnamon trade, Galle features a maze of streets lined with mansions, ancient churches, a lighthouse, and the impressive 17th-century fort. Surrounded on three sides by the ocean, this fort is one of the most dramatic structures in Sri Lanka. Begin your exploration of Galle Fort with a walking tour along its ramparts and winding streets. Return to Mirissa in the evening for a well-deserved rest.
After breakfast, leave Mirissa and head to Colombo. Upon arrival, check into your hotel, then join a guided tour of the vibrant Pettah Bazaar, Independence Square, the Parliament, and the National Museum. The tour concludes with a visit to the Barefoot fairtrade store, where you can browse a variety of local handicrafts and support small-scale industries. In the evening, you have the option to join a group dinner to commemorate your trip. If you choose to participate, you’ll enjoy a lively food crawl through the city’s numerous market stalls.
After breakfast today, there are no scheduled activities, and your adventure concludes. You’re welcome to depart at any time following check-out. If you wish to extend your stay, please contact your booking agent in advance to arrange for additional accommodation.
