Upon arrival, savor a delicious home-cooked lunch, complete with a refreshing welcome drink made from locally grown juice. Indulge in traditional Sri Lankan cuisine, crowned by a sweet slice of kithul thalapa for dessert.
After lunch, settle into your hotel before embarking on a visit to the revered Temple of the Tooth, a sacred site housing a tooth relic of Lord Buddha. The serene atmosphere and deep sense of reverence make it a profoundly moving experience, regardless of your spiritual beliefs.
If time permits, explore the Peradeniya Botanic Gardens, once the private sanctuary of Kandyan royalty. As the day winds down, join your group for an enchanting traditional dance performance, accompanied by the rhythmic beats of local music.
Get ready to immerse yourself in the stunning highlands today as you embark on a scenic train journey to Nuwara Eliya. This charming town, nestled among evergreen hills and blessed with a cool climate, was once a favorite retreat for British colonialists in the 19th century, and many of its historic buildings still stand as a testament to that era. You’ll visit a tea factory to discover the art of cultivating some of the region’s most fragrant and highly esteemed teas. Nuwara Eliya remains a key player in the world of tea, with picturesque plantations adorning the hillsides. After your tour, you’ll return to Kandy—be sure to ask your guide for a recommendation on where to try some delicious kottu roti, a local favorite made from chopped roti, vegetables, and an array of spices. Kandy’s rich history as a major source of cinnamon and other spices ensures that the local cuisine is bursting with flavor.
This morning, say goodbye to Kandy and journey to Habarana, just 12 km from Sigiriya, where the awe-inspiring Lion Rock dominates the landscape. Your afternoon will be spent exploring this colossal landmark, but first, other unique experiences await. Begin with a visit to a spice garden to discover how the familiar spices from your kitchen are cultivated, then continue to the Dambulla Cave Temple. Here, you’ll find five caves adorned with paintings and statues of Lord Buddha, their walls and ceilings covered in murals that tell stories of a time when these caves were home to prehistoric Sri Lankans before the advent of Buddhism. After checking into your hotel, head out to experience Lion Rock itself. Marvel at the ancient frescoes, the remnants of a grand lion sculpture, and some of the world’s oldest landscaped gardens. As you climb the winding pathways, take in the breathtaking views and the remarkable example of ancient urban planning, all while enjoying the beauty of the sunset.
This morning, indulge in a leisurely start to your day before meeting your leader and fellow travelers for a delightful home-cooked lunch with a local family. Savor a refreshing welcome drink made from home-grown Sri Lankan tropical fruits, then step outside to the garden and settle under the shade of the trees. Here, you’ll feast on traditional dishes like rice and curry, possibly featuring fresh fish sourced from nearby lakes. After lunch, embark on an exhilarating jeep safari through Minneriya National Park, where you may encounter majestic elephants, graceful sambar deer, and elusive leopards amidst the park’s lush evergreen forests and scrublands.
Bid farewell to the lush landscapes of Sigiriya with an “Ayubowan” – a traditional greeting used for both hello and goodbye – and journey to Anuradhapura, where some of Sri Lanka’s best-preserved ancient ruins await. Embark on a guided bike tour around this UNESCO World Heritage site, immersing yourself in the grandeur of the ruins and imagining the area in its prime centuries ago. If you prefer a more relaxed experience, a tuk-tuk can take you on the tour. Anuradhapura is also home to a revered, ancient Bo tree, a direct descendant of the sacred tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment.
After enjoying breakfast, relax and soak in the scenery on your drive to Colombo. Once in the city, embark on a bus tour that highlights some of Colombo’s key landmarks, including Independence Square, Parliament, and the National Museum. - This trip is packed with activities, both included and optional, designed to help you make the most of your time in the country. We will visit several temples, so it’s important to dress modestly. Please bring clothing that covers your arms and wear pants or skirts that extend past the knees. A light scarf is also recommended for covering your shoulders and arms, especially in the heat.
- While Sri Lanka enjoys relatively consistent temperatures year-round due to its equatorial location, the summer months can be very hot, with brief but intense monsoons in the southwest. Make sure to use adequate sun protection and stay hydrated throughout your journey.
- The Rock Fortress of Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock, is a breathtaking site. However, if you have a fear of heights or are uncomfortable with narrow, steep steps and tight walkways, you may want to skip this excursion.
